Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Volunteering

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age or older.

Can I volunteer at more than one campus?

Gracie Square Hospital is affiliated with NewYork-Presbyterian. You may volunteer at more than one NewYork-Presbyterian campus. However, if you begin the interview and clearance process with a particular campus, you must continue with that campus until you have completed a minimum of 75 hours. Once that minimum is met, you may add an additional campus.

What if I don’t meet the minimum hour requirement?

If you do not meet the minimum hour requirement, we will not be able to write you a letter or sign any paperwork to confirm your completion of volunteer service.

How often do I need to come in to volunteer?

You are expected to come in once a week for four (4) consecutive hours. This is the minimum commitment.

What if I cannot come in?

Please contact your supervisor and let him or her know that you are unable to attend that day. We do ask that you make up any missed assignment(s) and give advanced notice when possible.

What if I need to take time off?

We offer a Leave of Absence up to six months. After six months you will be considered a new volunteer and need to complete the entire application and clearance process again. We also cannot guarantee that you can return and cannot hold your assignment during a leave.

Do I need to speak English?

Ability to read, write and speak English is required.

When will I hear from Volunteer Services about my application?

You should expect to hear from us within 4-6 weeks upon receipt of your application.

How long does the volunteer onboarding process take?

Anywhere from 3-6 weeks. This is dependent on your availability and urgency to complete the process.

Can I shadow a Doctor or Physician?

Shadowing is outside the scope of the volunteer role.
